Southern Maine Medical Center’s newly constructed Cardiopulmonary Wellness Center features state-of-the-art fitness equipment in a bright, spacious environment. It’s the perfect setting for you and our specially trained team of physicians, nurses and exercise physiologists to work together to develop and implement a plan tailored to your individual goals. Our medically supervised programs give you peace of mind and the extra personal attention you won’t find in your neighborhood gym. And it’s fun! State-of-the-art Equipment:

Cardiac Rehabilitation
Exercise, education, and support designed to guide you through the recovery process. As you recover from your heart event, you may qualify to participate in the Phase II Cardiac Rehabilitation program held at our Cardiopulmonary Wellness Center. You may have had a heart attack, a coronary angioplasty, had heart surgery or even managed with medications. While participating in our program, you will learn about the heart's function, heart disease, and the role of diet and exercise in adopting a heart healthy lifestyle. You'll confidently increase your activity in a safe, monitored environment, where you receive ongoing support and guidance from our qualified staff. If you’ve recently had any of the following diagnoses or surgeries, you may qualify for participation in Cardiac Rehabilitation at SMMC:

  • Myocardial infarction (heart attack)
  • Coronary artery bypass surgery
  • Coronary angioplasty/stenting procedure
  • Angina
  • Heart valve repair/replacement
  • Heart or heart-lung transplant
A registered nurse and clinical exercise physiologist hold supervised exercise sessions several times a week with classes held at various times throughout the day. A program will be developed for you and your specific needs. Each session includes:
  • Aerobic exercise, such as walking or stationary cycling
  • Strength training exercises
  • Stretching exercises

  • A healthier heart
  • Increased endurance
  • Healthy muscles, bones and joints
  • More energy
  • Better ability to cope with distress
  • A sense of well-being
  • Better sleep
SMMC’s Phase II program includes a complete educational series on topics such as:
  • Heart disease
  • Physical activity
  • Blood pressure
  • Cholesterol
  • Medications
  • Nutrition
  • Living with heart disease
Spouses, family members, or significant others are welcome and are encouraged to attend these free discussion groups.

The earlier you take charge of your health, the sooner you can see improvements in your daily life. Many insurance programs cover Cardiac Rehabilitation for specific conditions with a referral from your physician.
