YORK COUNTY, ME – On Wednesday, June 9th, Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC) hosted an event to dedicate a beautiful fountain within the Auxiliary Healing Garden, just outside its Main Lobby. Donated in memory of E. Ruth Bibber, the fountain was chosen by the Bibber family of Kennebunk and purchased thanks to donations from family and friends. Approximately 70 people were in attendance for the dedication ceremony celebrating Mrs. Bibber’s life.
SMMC’s president & CEO Ed McGeachey acknowledged Mrs. Bibber’s volunteerism in the SMMC Auxiliary and thanked the Bibber family. He commented, “The Bibber family has created a beautiful tribute that will be seen by the thousands of people who pass through our doors every year – whether they are here to celebrate a birth, have a simple test or struggle with a serious illness. The natural design and peaceful sounds of the fountain are a wonderful complement to the beauty of this garden, which is a place that draws people young and old, well and ill, residents and visitors, because it offers something we are all in need of at one time or another – a peaceful place of reflection and respite.”
Mrs. Bibber’s son, Richard Bibber, spoke on behalf of the family during the dedication ceremony noting, “The Bibber family has over the years served this hospital in several different capacities. We are pleased and honored to provide this fountain, along with Ruth’s friends, here in this Healing Garden at SMMC. On the top of this fountain is a compass with the North, South, East and West inscribed into the stone signifying from whatever direction you come from, you will be treated with excellent care here at SMMC.”
The fountain, which was designed by Gnome Landscaping in Falmouth, was blessed by Reverend Carolyn Lambert just before the water was turned on. The Bibber family wrote the words etched into a plaque next to the fountain that reads, “May this fountain bring peace and healing waters to all who pass by.”
