| SMMC Named Among Top 5% of Hospitals in the Nation for Overall Patient Satisfaction |

York County, Maine – For the sixth consecutive year, Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC) has received a national award for healthcare service quality.
Avatar International, a national healthcare research and consulting organization, recently named SMMC as one of its Exemplary Service Overall Best Performer’s for 2009. SMMC earned the award based on a full year of patient survey results that evaluated its service performance against hospitals across the United States and Canada.
According to Avatar, SMMC's patient satisfaction ratings in outpatient services, inpatient care, emergency care, and ambulatory surgery placed them in the top 5% of hospitals in the country for overall patient satisfaction.
“To attain a high level of patient satisfaction for a single service line is commendable,” noted David Medvedeff, PharmD, MBA, CEO of Avatar, in making the announcement. “To achieve this result across all of the primary services lines within a hospital is indicative of SMMC’s commitment to service excellence. It is a remarkable accomplishment.”

The AVATAR recognition follows other awards received recently by SMMC. The Maine Health Management Coalition awarded SMMC and SMMC PrimeCare Physicians 3 Blue Ribbons for clinical excellence and preferred status; the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) recognized 18 SMMC physicians for providing outstanding care to patients with chronic heart disease or stroke and diabetes care; and SMMC Visiting Nurses was named among the Top 25 HomeCare Elite agencies in the Nation, ranked by an analysis of performance measures in quality outcomes, quality improvement and financial performance.
