Health care in the 21st Century is as much about preventing accidents and illnesses as it is about healing the sick. This “new” emphasis is an old one at Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC) where we have always believed that patient education is a key component of our mission. We are delighted that Ira Rosenberg of Prime Motor Group has made a $1,500 gift to SMMC to purchase a Dial-a-Belt, a full-size, lightweight automobile seat that can be easily moved from room to room for car seat installation training.
“SMMC is committed to helping parents, first time and beyond, create the safest possible environment for their children,” stated Jan Roberts, manager of SMMC’s Birthing Suite. “We require parents to receive car seat education before they leave the hospital with their newborn, and this new Dial-a-Belt allows us to demonstrate the correct installation of the infant seat using nearly all the seat belt configurations available in cars today. We are extremely grateful to Ira Rosenberg and Prime Motor Group for their generous donation.”
Specially designed for use in hospital settings, the Dial-a-Belt is created from materials that are medical-environment friendly. The vinyl covering of the seat is the same medical grade material used in ambulances. The seatback is ABS plastic from top to bottom, preventing spilled materials or fluids from absorbing or staying in the structure. The whole Dial-a-Belt seat can be washed or wiped down.
Rebecca Sevigny, SMMC's certified child passenger safety technician and childbirth educator, adds, "Every day there are more than 18,000 vehicle crashes in the United States. Proper installation of child restraints is so very important. Vehicle belts, Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) are all very important to use correctly along with the child restraint harness. I encourage parents to read their manuals and ask questions. The Dial-A-Belt allows us to demonstrate the proper installation of their child's car seat. I will spend as much time as needed to answer questions and encourage proper install and seat use.”
