The future of health care in York County looks very exciting!
Ed McGeachey, president and CEO of Southern Maine Medical Center (SMMC), and Patsy Aprile, president and CEO of Goodall Hospital, are hosting a series of Community Forums to discuss their organizations’ merger into Southern Maine Health Care (SMHC) on January 1, 2014. The public is invited to come and learn how SMHC will benefit the health and health care of local communities for generations to come.
“The formation of Southern Maine Health Care, a dynamic new regional healthcare system, will strengthen healthcare services in the York County region,” said Ed McGeachey, president and CEO of SMMC and SMHC. “By coming together, SMHC will be able to make investments in services and state-of-the-art technology that will benefit the community for years to come while also achieving cost savings that will help control the rising cost of health care.”
“Health care is extremely complex and changing rapidly,” said Patsy Aprile, president and CEO of Goodall Hospital. “Faced with shrinking payments, community hospitals are under tremendous financial pressure. Despite concerted efforts to manage healthcare costs, it’s no secret that Goodall has struggled financially for years. Our merger with SMMC will help ensure that the Sanford community will continue to have access to critical healthcare services through Southern Maine Health Care.”

On October 2, 2012, Southern Maine Medical Center and Goodall Hospital announced the formation of a new parent corporation, Southern Maine Health Care, the York County member of MaineHealth. SMMC and Goodall Hospital remain separate organizations at this time, each with their own operations and medical staff. However, through their partnership within Southern Maine Health Care, both organizations and their medical staffs have been working closely together to develop integrated services and operations which will enhance patient care, control the cost of health care, and improve the health of people in the communities they serve. The organizations will merge into Southern Maine Health Care on January 1, 2014.
