Neurology

The Neurology Department at SMMC offers the following services:

• EEG (Electroencephalogram)

EEG - Records the electrical activity of the brain. Electrodes are attached to the head so that electrical activity can be measured and recorded. The test is used to help evaluate the health of the brain and to diagnose nervous system disorders.

24 Hour Ambulatory EEG - The ambulatory EEG records brain activity for 24 hours on a small recorder that's worn around the waist. Electrodes are applied to the scalp with a glue-like substance, and the patient is sent home with a diary to record activities and any symptoms.

• EPs (Evoked Potentials)

Evoked potential tests are used to check the condition of the nerve pathways. They measure the brain's electrical response to the signals sent by the nerves. EP tests help diagnose nervous system abnormalities, hearing loss, and assess neurological functions.

Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potential - Checks the pathway from the ear to the brain. The BAEP test may help uncover the cause of hearing and balance problems, as well as other symptoms.

Visual Evoked Potential - Checks the pathway from the eyes to the brain. May help find the cause of certain visual problems and other conditions.

Somatosensory Evoked Potential - Checks the pathway from the nerves in the limbs to the brain. It's a way to study the function of the nerves, spinal cord, and brain.

Each test is interpreted by a board-certified Neurologist.
